The Department runs a programme in HND Industrial Art which consists of (4) thematic areas of study and has a well-defined academic progression structure within the context of National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Policy and Qualification Framework. These areas are Ceramics, Graphic Design, Textile Design and Jewellery/Metal Design.
The Department of Fashion Design and Textiles (FDT) was established in November 2012 with the core mandate of training students to acquire modern skills and competencies in the field of Fashion and Textiles. The Upper West Region is blessed with energetic youth who need to be educated to help curb rural urban migration and unemployment. The Fashion and Textiles industry is a dynamic field that continuously evolves with new trends, technologies, and market demands. The Fashion Design and Textiles program is essential to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to meet these industry requirements. The core mandate of this program is to meet Ghana’s domestic needs in clothing and fashion, open up export opportunities for the economy as well as train creative/innovative professionals to meet challenges and standards in fashion, design and textiles.
The Liberal Studies Department is a service department that provides a broad spectrum of skills and knowledge for General Liberal Education within a multi-disciplinary framework. It prepares students to develop interactive, creative and critical minds in order to enhance their learning and communication in appropriate socio-cultural contexts. The Department Works closely with all the Academic Departments of the University. The Department is mandated to equip students of the entire University with basic as well as advanced concepts and knowledge in generic courses such as Communication Skills, Entrepreneurship, Business Communication, Functional French, Secretarial French, Principles of Law, Economics, Mathematics, Research Methodology, Quantitative Methods, and relevant knowledge in African Studies to enable them to function effectively as future professionals and technocrats
The Department of Agricultural Engineering was accredited in 2003 to run a three-year Higher National Diploma (HND) programme with three specialised options: Soil and Water Engineering, Postharvest Technology and Agricultural Mechanisation. In 2006, the department adopted the Competency-Based Training/Learning (CBT/CBL) methodology in teaching delivery to provide employable skills and competencies needed for industry and commerce. In 2022, the department mounted both four-year and two-year Bachelor of Technology in Agricultural Engineering Programmes.
The Civil Engineering industry is an essential prerequisite for the socio-economic advancement of a developing country such as Ghana. As such, personnel in this industry need to identify with apt principles, practical skills, and knowledge, given that health, safety, aesthetics, and ergonomics are critical in the industry. The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the Academic Departments of the Faculty of Engineering, established in the 2006/2007 academic year, as the fifth accredited programme of the University. The mandate is to offer hands-on world- class training of management and supervisory personnel to provide the needed supervisory role to link theory and practice to support planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of systems to maintain and improve industrialisation and socio-economic advancement of Ghana.
The Department of Electricals/Electronics Engineering is one of the youngest Department in Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University. The Department from the start has tried in various ways to work in accordance to the mandate of the University. The department aims at training highly qualified personnel to attain a Higher National diploma (HND) with the requisite knowledge and practical skills for managerial, supervisory and Technical support positions in the field of Electrical/Electronics, Medical Technology and the Telecommunications. Organizations such as VRA, GRIDCo, NEDCo, ECG, Hospitals, Electrical Engineering Service Contractors, Electrical/Electronic Business owners, Telecommunication Industry present in the region and beyond, require middle manpower personnel to effectively manage these organizations and the department would provide well trained and industry driven personnel to offer this needed support.
The Mechanical Engineering Department has been in existence since 2008, following its accreditation to offer a Three-year Higher National Diploma (HND) programme. In 2022, the Department received additional accreditation to run a Four-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Mechanical Engineering alongside the existing HND programme. Since then, the Department has made concerted efforts to align its operations with the mandate of the University. Its primary objective is to train mechanical engineers who can meet the growing demand for middle-level technical manpower in the country. These engineers are expected to contribute to the development, production, and manufacturing of equipment essential to various industries and the labour market. The Department also plays a critical role in alleviating the workload of engineers within the Upper West Region and beyond. Through design, analysis, and innovation, Mechanical Engineers trained by the Department are well-positioned to contribute meaningfully to the realisation of the Government of Ghana’s industrial and developmental vision.
The Department of Building Technology and Estate Management (BT&EM) was established in March 2006 as a key academic department of the then-Wa Polytechnic, which has since evolved to become Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University. The Department is an academic unit within the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology. This department stands out within the University as it offers two separate and distinct academic programmes catering to students' diverse interests and career paths in Building Technology (BT) and Estate Management (EM).
The ICT Department which was established in 2007 has the mandate to train and educate students in digital literacy and innovation for both Higher National Diploma and Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology. This is in line with national agenda like ICT for Accelerated Development and Coordinated Program for Economic and Social Development policies. The Department has churned out about 500 competent IT professionals who are working in various sections of the economy since its inception.
The Department of Dispensing Technology was established to train middle-level human resources for hospital pharmacies, community pharmacies, the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry and medical sales and dispensing outlets. The Department was granted accreditation by the National Accreditation Board on 1st September 2012 to run the HND Dispensing Technology programme.
The Department of Science Laboratory Technology offers a dynamic HND program designed to prepare students for careers in a wide range of laboratory settings – including analytical, industrial, medical, environmental, food, and regulatory sectors. Our program combines hands-on training with strong theoretical foundations; ensuring graduates are job-ready and well-equipped to meet industry demands.
The Department of Hotel, Catering and Institution Management was established in 2012 and had the accreditation to start B.Tech in Hospitality and Catering Management in 2023. The department now has its second batch of students.
The Department of Secretaryship and Management Studies was established in 2003 and was accredited to run the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Secretaryship and Management Studies programme.
The Department of Purchasing and Supply Chain Management is the youngest of all the three Departments in the Business School, having been established in 2011 to offer Diploma in Business Studies programme to prospective students who could not gain direct entry into the Higher National Diploma Programmes. Later in 2017, it received accreditation to run Higher National Diploma Programme and later the Bachelor’s Programme in 2022.
The Accountancy Department exists to spearhead the competent development of career-focused graduates with the vision to transform the financial landscape of local businesses in all spheres of the Ghanaian economy. The department is motivated to blend out courses, workshops, and lectures that provide instructional finance planning and accounting methodologies to train professionals for demand-driven businesses that may require them.
